Summer Camp (April 2010)

Summer Camp

At Omkoi Coffee Hostel

17-23 April 2010

A summer ministry by Karen students from Payap International University.

We usually arrange a camp for children when they are out of school for summer holiday. Then the students at Payap University are out of class also and help conduct a camp program for our children. This gives the Payap students a project for the summer, and experience in ministering to children. The camp helps our children by giving them constructive activities when school is not in session, so they don’t waste the time or get involved in activities which can be undesirable or even dangerous, especially during Song Kran Days (Thai Water Festival).
This summer ministry was started several years ago when we asked the Karen students at Payap International University to help us with the camp. The Payap students are encouraged to share their knowledge, experience, and songs with the children. The Payap students are also asked to play games with the children. The Karen students at Payap have always willingly helped with the summer camp.

The summer camp this time was beset by several problems because the Omkoi hostel building needed to be repaired and the Maw Kler Kee Hostel need to moved to the new location (at a former cemetery). We were not able to have our summer program in the mountains, or outside our hostel, because of concern  about being present for finishing repair on our hostel building at both Omkoi and Maw Kler Kee.  Also, were not totally prepared with planning for food for the camp program so we could not invite as many children as usual.

We asked Rev. Tin Oo, from Chaingmai Christian Fellowship, if he would help recruit Karen students from Payap University to teach  for our summer camp at the Omkoi coffee hostel.  He arranged Master Clean from KTBC, Insein Bible collage, Master Thra Tun Kwaw Thein, from the Bible league, Brother John and Brother Chalom, from Payap University  Chingmai to help us for this camp.

17 April 2010

We arrived in the evening of April 16. Early morning 6:30 am. Ms. Clean did not waste the time because she had only one day to teach the children. She taught the children in the girls’ dorm (where she slept because we have limited space).

The attendance at the camp was primarily girls; only two boys.  We were not able to contact our male students because it was school holiday and they had gone back to their villages, some quite remote.  And some of the boys were working at jobs and could not come.

On April 17 the first day of camp was started with prayer. We thank the Chaingmai Karen Fellowship for letting us use their keyboard for this camp.

After completion of studies the teachers led the children in games.

We thanks to Mike & Wanda for these 40 T-shirts they gave to  our coffee hostel (Omkoi)

The teachers had to return to Chaingmai, so we also took the children to Chiangmai as this first team of teachers went home.

At Chiangmai we were allowed to stay over night at Rev. Tin Oo’s and Ms Clean’s house. We thank Rev. Tin Oo and Ms. Clean for letting the children stay in their homes while visiting Chiangmai

18 April 1020

Today is Sunday, The children were able to attend a 7:00AM church service at the Chiangmai Karen Fellowship, and they sang some songs at the service.

We also attended a service at 11:00 AM at the Tam Ma Ni Kim Church where the children again sang some songs.

The children visited Grandma Evelyn Dee at her residence and sang for her at 1:00 PM.  Grandma Dee was unable to leave her residence because she had fractured her ankle after collapsing at her daughter’s funeral.

The children were then taken on a sightseeing tour of Chiangmai. One of the places they visited was the Airport Plaza. The children left at 4:00 PM to return to Omkoi, along with Miss Azalia and Brother Chalom, the second group of teachers for this camp.

We thank Elder Pe Tru Pah, one of the hostel committee members from Kler Day village, for driving the children from Omkoi to Chiangmai and back to Omkoi.

19 April 2010

Elder Pe Tru Pah began the next day by speaking to the children, encouraging them to be good learners.

Miss Azalia and Brother Chalom relax near the river after a day of instruction to the children.

During the evening Brother Chalom teaches the children how to play cane ball.
