Christmas & Baptism 2011

Christmas & Baptism

Partners Alaska

1-4 January 2011

After two years from the beginning of Maw Kler Kee Coffee Hostel the villagers asked that we hold Christmas for children in the village.  This was a surprise to us because there is not even one Christian in this village, and some villagers resist anything Christian.  But because of the villagers’ request we arranged what we could.  We also had information that some villager here and some from nearby villages wanted to get baptized, so we scheduled baptism the next day after Christmas celebration day.
To accommodate friends who were joining us, we organized Christmas for children and villagers at Maw Kler Kee in January 1, asking Pastor Taw Soe to start the Christmas celebration for the children and villagers in the afternoon, while the guests would leave from Chiangmai in the morning to arrive in time for the celebration in the evening.
Four teams of our friends were able to join for this trip. They were Partners (Alaska), GTO (Chiangmai), AAI (Chiangmai), and Tom Robinson’s family.  (Our friend, Antonio Lignon, canceled this trip because of illness.)
After we confirmed the Christmas celebration at Maw Kler Kee Coffee Hostel, people from Kler Day and Maw Ko Kee, and students from Siloam Bible school who had apprenticed at Kler Day village, also came to celebrate with us.
Terry Martin from Alaska gave us the great name, “Team Jesus.”
1 January  2011

Actually, Jocelyn Martin, the Alaska team leader, told us that her team could be with us for five days.  But the children from Coffee Hostel (Omkoi) who traveled with us needed to return to their village sooner because their teachers would visit their villages during this short holiday. So our trip this time was very short, but everything we hoped to accomplish was done.  Though “Team Jesus” members came from different places, but coordination was good, as if they had practiced together before.

At first we planned to depart from Chiangmai at 9 am. to reach Maw Kler Kee at 5 pm, to continue the program with Pastor Taw Soe and the Bible school students. But we didn’t depart from Chiangmai until noon, so we reached Maw Kler Kee at 9 pm. The Siloam Bible school and children from Coffee Hostel(Omkoi) had gone ahead, so the program proceeded and we could continue it when we arrived.
We brought a generator with us but when we arrived it malfunctioned and produced no electricity. We borrowed a battery from a villager to have light on the stage and for the small amplifier for sound. The power failed many times, but the team continued the program until the end (at midnight).
The team performed a skit of the baby Jesus story, told about animals in Alaska, did a skit of the Good Samaritan, songs from Coffee Hostel(Omkoi), a skit for environmental awareness by Coffee Hostel (Omkoi) taught by Kate from AAI, and a song from GTO,  closing with a show from the Maw Kler Kee Coffee Hostel.

 2 January 2011

We had church service at Maw Kler Kee Coffee Hostel at 10 am., and after that the baptismal service. The last baptism there was in November 2010, but that time the people from Maw Kler Kee were prevented from being baptized by the (animist) village elder. But after they got permission from the elder they were anxious for baptism so we did so even though quite soon. This time there were eight new believers in Maw Kler Kee and four from villages around.
Apprentice students Pi Si and Nwae Bu helped the hostel parent scooping rice for children.

Foreign friends brought their own food. We asked teen children from Omkoi Coffee Hostel to separate donated clothing according to size and gender for easy distribution to the children and villagers

These clothes donated by Mary and Chuck from America. These scarves were donated by Hay Min’s family from Bangkok These clothes were donated by Miss Thiya Nalin from Chiangmai.

At 9:45 AM children from Omkoi Coffee Hostel sang praise songs before the church service began.

Intern students from Christos Bible School had been helping us for six weeks. Pi Si (right hand) is one of two students that we support to study in Bible school for mission in these areas. Now she is a second-year student. Nae Bu is a Bible school student that Christos Bible school sent as a companion for Pi Si. Both of them taught hygiene to the hostel children, taught Bible to children and other people who were interested, taught Karen language to villagers who wanted to learn more of their native language, and helped the hostel parent as needed. This day both of them said goodbye to Maw Kler Kee Hostel to go back to continue their study. A representative of the children gave a Karen bag in thanks, and the Coffee Hostel Representative gave a certificate of appreciation to recognize their contributions
After the Sunday service we went to the pond which had been dug in front of the hostel for the baptisms. There was no ordained Karen pastor because no Karen Reverend we had contacted was available on this date because of their own busy schedules on this date. We then invited ordained Pastor Terry Martin and ordained Pastor Matt Fetters to do this baptism. We then sent the names of the people who got baptized back to their  on church or to the nearest church to their homes, and each received a baptismal certificate from TKBC (Thailand Karen Baptist Convention)

The questions for baptism were asked by Pastor Taw Soe, and then the ordained pastors baptized them. Baptism is the symbol that people have died to their old life (that was under evil power) and rose from death with Jesus, God’s resurrected Son (as their Savior).

At the previous baptism we had gone down to the bottom of the valley.  The path was very steep and difficult for many people. This time we decide to dig a pond for this baptism in the hostel’s front yard, so more villagers came to observe.

After the baptism ceremony ordained-pastor Matt Fetters gave the closing prayer.
Brothers and sisters shake hands to congratulate those baptized.

We gave hymn books that GTO have given to us and donated clothing to new believers.
After the baptism the pond became the childrens’ play pond immediately. The first picture is medicine Mr. Antonio Lignon gave to us. Half of the donated medicine we shared to Senior Evangelist Wright Dee for his mission, and the other half was given for both coffee Hostels.

In the mountains like this motorcycles deteriorate very quickly. We changed Pastor Taw Soe’s motorcycle brake to the ordinary one because on this kind of road the disk brake wears out very soon.

This is the place where we prepare to build a boys’ hostel, and the second floor is for hostel’s church. Mr. Mark Kovack donated 20,000 baht for starting this building.

Before leaving Maw Kler Kee Coffee Hostel for Omkoi, Brother Tom Robinson prayed for the hostel’s mission among surrounding challenges.

3 January 2011

The next day we were at a resort not very far from Omkoi town. The weather was cold but everybody slept well. Before the team went to Omkoi Coffee Hostel, the team planned activities for the children.

Lunch was at Omkoi Hostel, where we killed three pigs we fed. After lunch we had a childrens’ parents meeting. We invited Terry, Matt and Tom to give advice. As usual we told childrens’ parents that we want all children who stay with us to graduate with honor. This meeting we let childrens’ parents know that we won’t allow children go home by themselves and we won’t allow children go working to earn out side.  The risk to the children of accident or being misled is too great and we want to protect them.

We took a picture with the children’s parents.  (Sorry we did not review the banner before. Actually, we wrote Hostel but the banner shop wrote “Hotel.”)   From the time this hostel was started the visitors, relatives or villagers from the mountains had no place to sleep until taking a truck(taxi) back to their village; now they all overnight at Omkoi coffee hostel.  So far we have welcomed at least 300 brothers and sisters like this for lodging. So even though the spelling on the banner is wrong, practically this hostel serves villagers from the mountains like a hotel.  But we make no charge, and often provide food as well.

After the childrens’ parents meeting the children were still playing games led by Miss Kate from AAI (Asian Aliens International) After the children played, then this was for adults.

Dinner is ready. Thanks to Sister Nonglak Sarapan, our neighbor, for bringing food contributions giving us variety of menu.

P’ Jean does haircuts for the children.

Mr. Ken from GTO (Global Tribal Outreach) arrived at Omkoi this evening to join our Christmas celebration at Omkoi Coffee Hostel.

We started our Christmas program at 6.30 pm with a time of worship.  During the time of worship Pastor Matt Fetters from Alaska gave a sermon and encouraged the children. After that followed a variety performances.

After that were shows from each team. Thanks to Mr. Ken and family from GTO and Brother Harry, Brother Patboon from Chiangmai for their special music band, helping add color to the atmosphere.

Thanks to Miss Kate for directing the skit. She spent a short time practicing with the children, after which the children could convey the message very well.  The objective of this kind of skit is to tell villagers about the impact on environmental balance caused by human activities, which villagers experience themselves.  We hope to prevent and resolve these problem together in the future.
We told our hostel children that we had receive help from others, and we must help others as we can. If we have a chance we want to take our hostel children to help people in the mountains in the form of skits (insert with contents), entertainment to share useful information, pointing out the problems which villagers overlook, anticipating problems of the future, and then recommend solutions and prevention strategies.
The villagers have problems because of rodents eating rice.  The crops are decimated and leave families with insufficient food, causing some to seek employment far from home.  In Tee Kaw Klo village, Omkoi district, one family planted seven tins of rice in 2009 but the resulting harvest only yielded five tins for the family.
If the villagers started owl conservation by themselves today, the problem of mice destroying rice crops might end soon. Owls hunt mice at night, which is the same time that mice come out to eat the rice in the field.  Most of villager don’t know how to solve this problem so they just expand their rice fields hoping mice will not eat or destroy all, leaving some for harvest. But the mice just increase in number as rice growing area.
The type of mouse that eats and destroys rice has sharp teeth and is quite small in size. It is not the usual field mouse.  So we would like our hostel children to go out and tell villagers about this solution. This is a natural approach, since villagers do not have the capital to implement other solutions.  And this method will not impact the other food chain, and the forest won’t be destroyed to expand rice farms.
With this skit the children can go back and tell their brothers and sisters in the villages. The children in our hostel are from 17 villages.

 4 January 2011

Before the team from Alaska departs, we pray together and pray for each other.

Today our second floor is already tiled, and we will let the boys move up soon.  We also hope that we will have the ceiling because in the winter water vapor in the air condenses on the zinc roof and drips to the floor.

Thanks to Dr. Roger Butz for his revisions.
