Medical Team

February – March 2010

Mr. Friedhelm Metzger from the University of Nation, Hawaii, USA has prior contacted us about his trip to Thailand. As usual, he wanted to go to the village which located in remote areas to delivery the healthcare services for villagers who are in needed. According to traveling time consumed and ratio of population per village  Metal drum operating team arranged  7 villages covering two main areas of OmKoi district(Chianmai) and Ta Song Yang district(Tak) for Healthcare Services Team led by Friedhelm Metzger

25 Feb 2010

Prior our departure date, we prepared foods and drinks which would be sufficient for those two weeks in the villages, including medical supplies which would be distributed to the villagers

26 Feb 2010

เราไปถึงหมู่บ้านทีกอโกล(อมก๋อย) We left Chiang Mai on 26th of Febuary 2010 at 12.30 pm, stopped for dinner in Om Koi Town, after that we continued our trip and finally arrived at Tee Kaw Klo village (our first destination) at 22:30 pm.

27 Feb 2010

We notified the villagers one week prior our arrival, that we will come and delivery the healthcare services to them. Today we are here to serve and the healthcare services commenced at 8:30am.

28 Feb 2010

The majority of these villagers are Christian, so we asked the committee to grant us for a permission to use the church as a center of an operation to provide healthcare services for the villagers. Today is Sunday, we joined the morning service, some of our team’s member have shared their testimonies and encourage them through living witnesses. We were delighted to participate in this fellowship.
Thanks to Aunt Kara, besides being a great helper as an interpretor, she also helped us prepared the meals during our stay there. We enjoyed the food which can not compare with any others restaurant in town. We appreciated all efforts she has done for us.
For people who enjoy drinking coffee, fresh brewed coffee is offered and served throughout this trip, we have no sophisticated coffee machine but unique traditional methods is applied and started by getting hot water boiled by using firewood first then with a premium organic coffee bean grinded then comes the full aromatic favor of real coffee.

After lunch, we continued our work on serving the villagers for health care services until late evening

1 March 2010

Friedhelm เป็นหนึ่งในผู้ริเริ่มโครงการหอพักนี้ ถนนในพื้นที่เหล่านี้จะไม่ค่อยมีรถยนต์สัญจร สังเกตได้จากมีแต่ร่องรอยของรถจักรยานยนต์ บางช่วงถนนสองข้างทางแคบมาก ด้านข้างตัวถังรถยนต์จึงมีแต่รอยขีดข่วนด้วยพุ่มไม้ข้างทางที่ยื่นออกมาสู่ ถนน we traveled to the village named of Maw Kler Kee where we started to build a dormitory as our pioneer project in 2009. Friedhelm is one of the founders for this project. Non-asphalt road in these areas are not conductive to travel, main vehicle which being use in such a condition of road are motorcycle, and some traces of the roads are extremely narrow. All scratched from the bushes stick out from the sideways on the side of our truck can explain well on this issue.

ย. 2008 ผู้ใหญ่บ้านเก่แฮ มาบอกกับเราว่า ทางหมู่บ้านต้องการโรงเรียนของรัฐ จากความร่วมมือของเพื่อนๆของเรา ประมาณ 1 ปี  วันนี้โรงเรียนนี้ กลายเป็นโรงเรียนของรัฐแล้ว รํฐได้มาพัฒนาปรับปรุงและมีการก่อสร้างอาคารขึ้นเรื่อยๆ เราทราบมาว่าโรงเรียนนี้ในอนาคต อาจมีการเรียนการสอนจนถึงระดับมัธยมต้น(เกี่ยวกับหอพักนี้ในอดีต) Maw Kler Kee village has approximately 50 inhabitants  in Mae U Su area located in district of Tha Song Yang, Tak province, we first  came to this village last year in November 2008. Elder Gay Hae told us that this village needed a school. With all support from our friends and partnerships contribution enabled us to have this school established, which presently working in collaboration with the government sector in concern of the curriculum development and school building. It is  about a year now that this school has become a government school. We acknowledge the changes of this school since they have received  support  from government. In the future ,maybe academic level can be expanded to junior high school someday.
After school expansion, bigger territory is required so we have to relocation the dormitory to distance location according to the agreement of the village committee allowed us to settle at the end of the village. The new location is about 500 meters away from school location

2 March 2010

Once we decided to move the dormitories to a new location, we began to search the area where we were told that this area used to be a location of an old cemetery. The only problem we encountered at that time was the road was not favorable; we have to make ourselves a new road in order to delivery and transport essential construction’s equipments and supplies

We continued our work on healthcare services at Mor Kler Kee School until 5 pm

3-4 March 2010

Following day before we leaving to the next village, childrens came for a valediction and sing for the team as thankful and appreciation.
ตาก อยู่ไม่ไกลจากหมู่บ้านมอโก้คีมากนัก ที่นี่มีศูนย์การเรียนรู้ชาวไทยภูเขา ดูๆแล้วก็เหมือนโรงเรียน แต่ยังไม่เรียกว่าโรงเรียน เราติดต่อขอพักที่นี่ เพราะมีห้องน้ำ, มีอาคารที่เราสามารถพักได้ และมีอาคารที่เราจะให้บริการด้านสุขภาพให้ชาวบ้านได้ ที่นี่เราสามารถให้บริการกับหมู่บ้านใกล้เคียงอีก 3 หมู่บ้าน Tah Jo Koh village located in Mae U Su,Tha Song Yang not far from Maw Kler Kee, here in this village they  have a hill tribe cultural learning center, seems alike the normal school or learning center but not yet can called as school. We requested to stay here because restroom convenient for the team and we can use the building as operation centre to serve people from 3 villages nearby

5 March 2010

Some members from our team ran out of visa so we have to take them to renew the visa in Mae Sot, Tak province. We left Tah Jo Koh early while remainder carry on to the next village called Ka Nae Ju Kee

6 March 2010

We took this opportunity while we were in Mae Sot, bought and sent the food for the children in dormitory at  Maw Kler Kee via pastor Taw So who came with motorcycle  which previously contributed by Mr. Friedhelm and his friends(see picture of mentioned motorcycle, click here).

Ka Nae Ju Kee village, we visited last year and the they requested  to have us come back this year. Here they also have a learning centre, if the children would like to pursue further on education with government school in Maw Kler Kee, they would need to stay at our hostel

We notice a genuine male fashion in the past and become popular again with teenagers nowaday.

Dodo and Aunt Kara, both are great on cooking we are being served with delicious meal for the entire trip.

7 March 2010

We left Ka Nae Ju Kee Village for Old Maw Koh Kee. We apparently have 2 Maw Koh Kee villages, an Old and New Maw Koh Kee because in the past if someone became a Christian, he or she would not allowed to live together with others in village. Today is Sunday; our team attended worship in the village of New Maw Koh Kee. People with traditional spiritual worship belief that practice of black magic will not succeed if there is Christian in the village. Here is the reason why these two villages are separated.

Today we use the learning centre at Old Maw Koh Kee school as a station for health services. We would like to thank you all concern people for their contribution

9 March 2010

Today we heard that one lady is severely ill from high fever and could not come to our station. Friedhelm decided to visit that patient at home. We finally brought this patient to the station, while we were traveling back to station, some villagers and her relatives requested to have their health checked as well

In additional to rice planting, most of the Karen people raising pork, chicken and cow. This is the way of life here. Women will keep a cultural dress better than men. In the past, most women will inheritated on traditional tribal weaving, a lovely young woman who wants to get married needed to make a groom for a woven shirt. Such a superior intelligence by the elders to protect the civilization of garment, art and cultural by these means. Nowadays we still see Karen women, maintaining regular tribal costumes; however, we do not know how long this pride and value can resists new trends of fashion and clothing design in this modern world

Each meal, before serving rice, people will pound the rice with traditional mortar then winnow to remove the chaff of the rice out then the rice is ready to be cooked and served.

ช่วงค่ำคณะไปเยี่ยม, หนุนใจด้วยการแบ่งปันพระคำของพระเจ้าให้กับพี่น้องในหมู่บ้านมอโก้คี(ใหม่) In the evening our teams visited the villagers, encouraged by and sharing the word of God to our friends in Christ in the village of New Maw Koh Kee.

10 March 2010

Mission here in this village has been accomplished. Our next village on our lists named Tee Kaw Klo(Mae U Su): means difficult creek, same name as the previous one but first Tee Kaw Klo located in Om Koi area. The road to this village is very difficult reflecting the name of the village. As mentioned earlier our friend Mr. Friedhelm Metzger has clear concept about evangelism: go to the place where people usually do not go. We thank him for his ambition and we are now practicing to achieve that goal. This year is the sixth year that we went to areas and served those people together, we will go far and away every year

The first thing we did when we arrived there was fixing the toilet which has been abandoned for years and can not be used. The condition was very poor. After spent 2 hours on cleaning and fixing, we finally have a temporary toilet in use.

Cooking with firewood required an exclusive skill and individualized experience. One must be familiar with technique to adjust the level of the desired heat we asked an expert, Pastor  Taw So to assist us on this matter.

According to the number of the children in the village, as well as seeing these children are lack of personal hygiene. Our team has intercalated the knowledge through stage performance, focused on personal hygiene by teaching them how important to keep themselves clean and learn how to protect themselves from common diseases found among their age.

Most of the girls have lice so we introduced them to apply a special medicated shampoo to get rid of this problem

(Photo attached)

Here is the picture of lice which came off from the girls after treatment has been given (photo)

One thing which is commonly found among children here are worms; parent told us while the children were sleeping at night, worms usually come out of the mouth or some cases worms even come out while they were coughing. Adult also suffer from worms. The team were educated the villagers about the causes, symptoms and remedy for worms and also make sure that all family members are treated, and family are careful with hygiene practices especially hand washing

11 March 2010

We continue to serve the villagers one more day (Tee kaw Klo) because we also have patients from other villages came for the service
We captured the fashion of women with tribal costumes; most of them will have their ears pierced and wearing beautiful earrings. As well as necklace this can not be missed!!

In the evening we have fellowship together with people in the village, here there are some Christians, but majority are traditional beliefs (spirit worship) although they are different in beliefs but they still  live with harmony together

We left for Chiang Mai earlier due to traveling time required we know it will takes us sometime to reach our final destination. Unfortunately our trip was interrupted by problem from the vehicle, one of our vehicle oil’s pipe was leaking and immediate needed to be repaired. At the end, problem was solved within two hours. We arrived safely in Chiang Mai at 5:30 pm. Apart from traveling with us to delivery medical services; Friedhelm has also donated some funds (24,920 THB) to support our ministry on Dormitory’s projects

Thanks to Ms. Thiya Nalin for her translation
