This year I thought I would not be able to hold the Summer Camp, but finally, thanks to God, we were provided with another chance. I contacted Dave Khai,(the musician-missionary) that we talked to about teaching us how to set up a music band at the Omkoi Hostel. At the Omkoi Hostel we have the musical instruments that Pastor Jeffrey Saw from Australia brought to us during his Christmas trip in the mountains with us; there are enough instruments for playing as a band – we just lack only a keyboard.  I just thought that if the Omkoi Hostel children could learn the fundamentals of how to play music as a band, then these music instruments will become quite useful, especially for playing worship songs.

But when I decided to hold this Summer Camp on April 22, 2013, Dave informed me that he could not come, because he hasanother program at that time.  However, he asked Ellen (the teacher-missionary) and she and her friend Emma came instead of Dave.  The subject of their teaching will be ‘Worship Dancing.’

For this trip I planed that while Ellen and Emma are teaching at Omkoi, I will go to MawKlerKee to bring rice, food and necessary things before the rainy season begins.  I checked the availability of MawKlerKee Hostel for next semester, and brought two new hostel caregivers to MawKlerKee;  they are Evangelist NawPo and Evangelist Pisi, both recent Bible school graduates from Christos Bible School in MaeSaRiang. They are both Bible school students that Metal Drum Ministries supported throughout their studies, until they graduated.

There are 4 subject in this Summer Camp; they are: 1) Choir, by Posi from MaeLa Bible School, 2) Fundamentals of Setting Up a Music Band, by Eh LerTha, 3) Positive Thinking, by Uncle Mike,and 4) Worship Dancing by Ellen and Emma. The total number of students attending this camp was 34 children.

I invited Uncle Mike to come with me for this camp. Uncle Mike then invited brother Eh LerTha, the singer and musician and former musical teacher at Christos Bible School, to come along as well.

Ellen, Emma and I arrived Omkoi in the evening of 24 April.

เนื่องจากบิลค่าน้ำของหอพักเพิ่มมากขึ้นมาก เราจึงสร้างถังเก็บน้ำเพิ่มขึ้นอีก 5 ถังใหญ่ เพื่อเป็นการประหยัดค่าน้ำและรองรับปัญหากรณีน้ำประปาไม่ไหล เพราะปีการศึกษาต่อไปนี้เราจะมีนักเรียนมาอยู่กับเราถึง 55 คน

Since our water bill increase very much, so we built more 5 water tanks beside  Omkoi Hostel’s wall to save water bill and in case there is no water from water supply, because there will be 55 children in this semester.

เราได้สร้างรั้วลวดหนามและประตูด้านหน้าหอพัก  เพราะหากผู้ดูและหอพักอยู่ด้านในหอพัก  จะไม่สามารถมองเห็นคนเข้า-ออกด้านหน้าหอพักนี้เลย

We set up barbed wire fence in front of the hostel for the children’s security, because the hostel parents were busy and not able to track people’s coming and  going.

โครงการอาหารของเรา ประสบปัญหาขาดน้ำในช่วงหน้าร้อนนี้ เราจึงแก้ปัญหาโดยการสูบน้ำด้วยมอเตอร์ไฟกระแสตรงโดยใช้พลังงานจากเซลแสงอาทิตย์  จากบ่อปลาขึ้นมาเก็บไว้ในแท้งน้ำที่เราสร้างขึ้นใหม่อีก 6 แท้งในฤดูร้อนนี้ เพื่อสำรองน้ำไว้ เพราะในโครงการอาหาร มีต้นไม้ที่ยังเล็กอยู่ มีหมู ไก่ และผู้ดูแลโครงการก็อาศัยอยู่ที่นั่น

Since our food project lacks water, we solved this problem by pumping the water from fish pond using a DC motor powered by solar cell panel; this enabled us to retain the water in the new water tanks we just finished building this summer, which will provide water to the small trees, pigs, chickens and our staff’s family.

เราปลูกกล้วยเพิ่ม ในชั้นล่างสุดของนาขั้นบันไดของโครงการอาหาร เพราะนอกจากผลกล้วยจะเป็นผลไม้สำหรับเด็กๆแล้ว ต้นกล้วยที่ให้ผลแล้วสามารถเป็นอาหารหมูที่เราเลี้ยงไว้ได้ด้วย

We are growing more banana trees at the lowest level of rice field in our food project, because in addition to providing bananas for the children, we can feed our pigs with the banana stalks.

ปลาในบ่อเริ่มเริ่มแพร่พันธุ์แล้ว เราใส่รำในตะกร้าให้ปลามาดูดกินรำรอบๆตะกร้าได้ และป้องกันไม่ให้รำกระจายหายไป

The fish in the ponds are starting to breed. We put rice bran in the basket, so the fish can eat the rice bran around the basket, while preventing the rice bran from dispersing and being lost.

โครงหลังคานี้ เราสร้างไว้เมื่อปีที่แล้ว  เพื่อใช้เป็นเล้าไก่บ้านเราเกรงว่าหากโดนน้ำค้างและฝนนานกกว่านี้ จะผุเสียก่อน เราจึงจำเป็นต้องมุงหลังคาไว้  เราสามารถใช้มาอาศัยร่มเงาของหลังคานี้เป็นที่หลบแดดหลบฝนขณะที่เด็กๆมาทำงานที่สวนได้เช่นกัน

This roof frame we built last year for local chicken pen. We worry that the bamboo will be decay if it is in the dew and rain longer than this, so we need roofing it. We also can use the shade of this roof for shady shelter when children come and work in food project field.

วันนี้น้องๆจะได้เรียนจากอาจารย์เอเลน และ อาจารย์ แอมม่า ทั้งสองเป็นครูและมิชชันนารี่ชาวฟิลิปปินส์  ที่มาทำงานอยู่ในเชียง ใหม่เธอทั้งสองสอนเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ และผมขอให้อาจารย์โพชิ เป็นล่ามให้น้องๆ

ผมและน้องผู้ชายสองคนจากหอพักอมก๋อย คือ สุรชาติ และเมษา ขึ้นไปที่หอพักมอเคล่อคีเช้าวันนี้ เพื่อไปส่งข้าวสาร, อาหารแห้งสำหรับปีการศึกษาที่จะถึงนี้  และสังกะสีและตาข่ายสำหรับขยายเล้าไก่ เพราะเพื่อนบ้านของเราที่มอเคล่อคี เตรียมพื้นที่สำหรับจะปลูกข้าวไร่ เราจึงต้องขังไก่เราไว้ในช่วงที่เขาหว่านเมล็ดข้าว อีก รายการหนึ่งที่ต้องเอาไปด้วยก็คือ มอเตอร์ไซด์ที่เรานำกลับมาซ่อม จนใช้การได้แล้ว เพื่อความสะดวกของทีมงานในยามที่จำเป็น

I and two boys  from Omkoi hostel, Surachat and MaySa, went to MawKlerKee this morning to bring rice/food for the next semesters.  We also brought zinc and netting to expand the chicken pen.  Because our neighbour at MawKlerKee is preparing their land for growing rice, we have to keep our chickens penned up so they don’t eat their rice seeds. Another thing we brought back to MawKlerKee Hostel is a motorcycle that was repaired in Chiangmai, and now is ready to use again.

The water tanks that we just built are still leaking a bit at the bottom, so I asked MaySa to plaster one more layer for a better seal.

These water tanks have proven to bevery useful because this summer the village water stopped occasionally, however, we still have reserved water from the water tanks to use.

พี้นห้องน้ำที่แตก  เราขอให้ซอมูป่าช่วยอุดให้เราด้วยปูน ก่อนที่เราจะมา และเขาก็ทำได้ดี และไม้ในห้องน้ำที่เริ่มผุ  เราเปลี่ยนใหม่ แล้วคลุมไว้ด้วยเศษของเสื่อน้ำมัน เพื่อป้องกันไม่ให้มันเปียกอีก

For the cracked floor in the bathroom, I asked SawMooPah to patch it before we arrived, and he did a good job. We changed the wood,which had begun to decay and covered the wood  with linoleum to prevent the wood from getting wet again.

We brought a grass cutter from Omkoi and asked SuRaChart to cut the long grass in the hostel compound to keep the area clean and tidy.

ที่มอเคล่อคี รั้วรอบๆแปลงผักผุหมดแล้ว เราจึงต้องเปลี่ยนเสารั้วใหม่ เราเพิ่งปล่อยปลานิลในบ่อปลาที่มอเคล่อคียังไม่นาน เพราะปลานิลสามารถขยายพันธุ์เองได้ เราเอาตะกร้าที่ให้อา หารไปติดตั้งให้  ไม่นานปลาก็เรียนรู้และมาดูดกินอาหารจากรูข้างๆตะกร้า วิธีนี้ไม่ทำให้อาหารไม่ฟุ้งกระจายในน้ำ เราได้ เดินสายไฟที่ห้อยระโยงระยางให้เป็นระเบียบขึ้น  และแก้ไขระบบไฟฟ้าในส่วนที่มีปัญหา ช่วงบ่ายของวันเราออกเดินทาง กลับอมก๋อย เวลามีจำกัดมาก เพราะวันรุ่งขึ้นอาจารย์เอเลนและแอมม่าจะต้องเดินทางกลับเชียงใหม่

At MawKlerKee Hostel, the fence post are already decaying, so we replaced them with new posts. We also put Tilapia in the our fish pond, because Tilapia can breeding by themselves. We placed a basket of rice bran in the pond to feed the fish, and they soon learned how to eat rice bran from the basket. This method keep the feed from dispersing in the water and is very practical. We also fixed electric wiring by properly hanging and securing to the building. In the afternoon we traveled back to Omkoi Hostel. We had a limited amount of time, because Ellen and Emma needed to travel back to Chiangmai the following day.

วันสุดท้ายของค่าย เราให้น้องๆแต่งชุดประจำเผ่า เพราะวันนี้อาจารย์เอเลน  จะมอบใบประกาศนียบัตรให้น้องๆที่เข้าร่วมค่ายฤดูร้อนนี้

The last day of Summer Camp, we asked the children to wear their tribal dress, as Ellen and Emma provided the children with a Summer Camp certificate for all who attended this summer camp.

หลังจากอาหารเที่ยง เราไปบันทึกเสียง ในสวนโครงการอาหาร เพราะที่หอพักอยู่ติดกับถนน และมีเสียงรถวิ่งไปมาตลอดเวลา วันนี้เราบันทึกเสียงได้เพียง 3 เพลง ส่วนเพลงประสานเสียงนั้น อ. โพชิ บอกว่ายังต้องซ้อมอีกอีกหน่อย

After lunch we went to the Food Project area to do our song recording because the hostel is too close to the road and so there is considerable noise from the passing vehicles. Today we recorded 3 songs.  As for the choir,  PoSi said the children still needed more practice.
