GTO visit Maw Kler Kee (July 2010)

Friends from GTO

visit Maw Kler Kee

21 July 2010

Rhonda from GTO informed us that she had some friends wishing to visit our hostel children to do ministry activities with them. They came in two groups; the first group going to the adolescents at Omkoi Coffee hostel, and the second group going to the children at Maw Kler Kee Coffee Hostel.

We left Chiangmai at 9 o’clock on July 21, 2010.  We stopped for lunch at Omkoi Coffee Hostel to leave the first group there.   With rest stops on the way we reached the village at 7 pm.  The children lined up to welcome us, looking very cute.

We have a few pictures of a team from GTO, led by Shaun and Brian, who conducted activities for the older children at Omkoi Coffee Hostel.

The group from GTO did not delay.  After dinner they immediately started activities for the children. The children listened attentively and learned what brothers and sisters from the West could do.  Bedtime for the children is 8 PM.  In this village malaria requires that the children to sleep under mosquito nets.

22 July 2010

Every morning at 5.30 AM Pastor Taw Soe leads worship with the children as a Christian hostel.  After Biblical teaching the children play together as children love to do.

Here is a scene from our balcony which stirred our imaginations.

After breakfast the children prepare their lunch by wrapping rice for school.
The umbrellas which the Helping Hands Project purchased are now very helpful for the children.  Without these umbrellas the children would not be comfortable going to school in the rainy season.
After children leave for school we survey the hostel to determine what is needed, or what problems need to be solved.

This is our chicken pen.  We have 25 chickens now, but most of them live outside the pen.  Some sleep in the tree beside the chicken pen.  Maybe they are naturally wild because they are not from the city.

The roof above our balcony is too short, so when it rains this terrace is always wet.
Thanks to God we finally have a dry place for the children to stay.  There are no holes in the floor, rooof and no bamboo powder on the walls to make children itch.  And we now have a cafeteria and an emergency water tank in case of a shortage.
The trees that we planted on our dedication day have now grown a little.  We hope these rain trees can give us good shade within 3 years

This time we brought more rain trees, these coming from brother Chana. We brought lime trees and other trees to plant in hostel area.

This young group divided into two teams. The first group went to teach English at Maw Kler Kee School, and the other team helped us by digging a fish pond. Now Maw Kler Kee School has two more new buildings, and housing for two more teachers.  (In the past our hostel was behind that flag pole.)
We brought boys down to the valley to see the ditch which we dug in hopes of running a hydro power generator.

When we came back from the valley we found that all of us had “donated” some blood to leeches. We stopped the bleeding the way the villagers do, by putting a small piece of paper on the point of bleeding.  (If we don’t do this the bleeding does not stop bleeding easily because leeches have a substance prevents the blood from clotting.  This method seems to cause the blood to clot.)

The hostel mother told us that two weeks before in the middle of the night her 12-year old daughter had heard a sound like someone hitting the wall very hard from outside, and that the sound moved up the wall and to the roof, crossing from one side to the other.   In the morning the hostel parents went to look at the point where the sound was heard and saw what appeared to be footprints step up the wall to the very top.
The hostel mother also told us that last month she heard a baby crying in front of the hostel at night despite the fact that there is no baby in this hostel.  In the morning she saw small foot prints on the front wall of the hostel close to the water tank.  After a month those footprints just disappeared.

While digging this fish pond we came upon tile plate waste like these periodically.  We collected these waste plates and took photos.  We heard from villagers that this village was ancient, once inhabited by Lawa people.  It was Lawa tradition to bury their dead with bowls.  We don’t know where these bowls came from, or how.  They may have been made by the Lawa, or brought from somewhere else.  The right bowl is one villagers found in 2008.

Before we went to Maw Kler Kee this trip I told Pastor Taw Soe that prepare some “thank you” songs for the sponsors who are helping our mission so I can record them and put into a slide show background. The children did quite well, with musical timing and notes well performed.

We brought some school supplies which were given by Teajon Christian International School (South Korea) sent to us after arranged by Mr. Brian Lavender.  We divided them between the two hostels.  The first portion included more pencils because there are more primary school students at Maw Kler Kee Hostel, and the second portion we was more pens because most students at Om Koi are middle & high school students.  We bought some medications for the hostels to keep.  Sometimes Maw Kler Kee villagers and others ask for medicine at our hostels so this is one of our missions, naturally.

Thanks to these young people from GTO for their kindness.  Although they don’t speak the same language, whenever they had free time they played with the children.  We saw many smiles from the children and heard much laughter when they were together.

Every mealtime we hear the children sing, “Thank God for the food.”  Older children serve the food for the younger ones.

At Maw Kler Kee we can buy wood planks at a reasonable price, so we can make simple tables and seats for our cafeteria.

After lunch elder brothers and sisters from America have games for the children.

After the sunset the children come back to the hostel and play in their groups.
At our hostel, in addition to spiritual teaching, we also teach their native Karen language to the children because the school teaches only Thai language.  To have a hostel in a Karen village like this helps the children to use their own language, to dress according to their own culture, proudly.  If the young children go to school in the city they don’t have a good chance to wear their own dress as some children are ashamed to wear their tribal dress and also ashamed to speak their own language around others. We want to change this attitude of racial embarrassment.   We believe we should preserve the differences because the world is more beautiful with the diversity.
We knew that these young people were tired from a whole day’s activity, but when they had opportunity to be with the children, they still played with them.  This was a good experience for these children, to play with foreign brothers and sisters without any travel expenses to go to see them.

23 July 2010

Next morning the team from GTO went to teach English at school again.  Thanks to teachers at Maw Kler Kee School for allowing our friends to teach the whole day.  We let these foreign teachers communicate with the children naturally as much as they possible.
This trip we brought bags of young plants for hostel.  This evening we worked with children to put soil in the plant bags for the young coffee plant we had prepared.  The children can then remember how this is done for working at their villages in the future.  They might become our coffee team(for environment) members someday.  This is another vision of our coffee hostel projects.
In this hostel the older girls practice traditional weaving when they are free from their routine work.  We are considering starting a weaving project for women and girls in this village to weave Karen bags for using in shopping.  This could generate income, and also reduce plastic bag use and non-biodegradable garbage.

This evening the team had some skits for children.  At bedtime the team says goodbye to the children because in the morning the children might leave for school before the team departs for Chiangmai.

24 July 2010

The whole night I could not sleep because of a sound disturbing my sleep.  I tried to locate the source of the noise with my flashlight but could not see anything to explain it.  It was like the sound actually came into my mosquito net.  The sound was like knocking on wood, timed about like a heartbeat.  When I was almost sleep, this sound came very close to me.  I came out from my mosquito net and looked around but did not see anything, and the sound moved away.  This happened about 7 times.  Finally I recorded that sound with my camera.  In the morning I asked the hostel father if he had heard a sound like that before, but he said he had not.  Then I asked Grandpa Kuh Lah Pah because he is an older people in that area, and he said that it might be because of the hostel’s location.
This kind of perturbation might cause the children to be afraid.  I told the hostel parents’ son to make a cross, as a symbol of Jesus Christ whom we trust as the Son of God who created every thing, to let these invisible things know that this hostel and these children belong to God.  Evil has no right to harm them.  We made this simple cross and put in front of the hostel, and then we prayed for this hostel again, leaving it in the hand of God.
We have heard of this kind of thing happening in other villages, and when villagers put the cross in their house’s area the evil stopped disturbing them.

We just thought that the time of year for this trip would be dry, and rain would be no problem.  But it started to rain the first night we arrived and rained every day, especially the evening and night of July 23.  After we put the cross in front of the hostel, we departed Maw Kler Kee in the rain.  Our truck got stuck just at the entrance of the hostel, and we had to wait until villagers came and pushed us.  Villagers told us that we should not go because the road was very slippery.  Actually it seemed wise to wait but the young people from GTO had to travel by plane the next day, so we were forced to start for Chiangmai.  While we were on the way we saw many landslides where the soil could not hold the water.  At most of the turns at the edge of each mountain there were grooves made by the water.  One of them was quite deep and very soft.  If we drove slowly we might get stuck in the mud.  We had only three men in our truck, so if we stuck in this groove we might not get out.  I decided to drive by force, but when the front wheel bounced out of the rut the truck hit the mountainside.  Thanks to God we finally got out of the woods safely.  I asked the fellow travelers to get good pictures but they were too excited.

Later I learned that after that trip the truck could not travel again  on this road until October.
